High Yield Instructional Strategies are techniques educators can use in their classrooms that enhance student learning and achievement. Robert Marzano, a leading researcher in education, has conducted research on these strategies that prove that each can yield a certain percentage of gains in student achievement (if used properly). (Marzano, 2009) The percentage gains can be seen in the graph below:
Cooperative learning is an educational approach which aims to organize classroom activities and teaching students there social skills. Having cooperative learning daily in a classroom does increase a child social skills and keeps the class in a daily routine too. These learning strategies are used in classrooms for every type of a student and enhances there skills and there learning skills throughout the school year.
Homework and Practices provides opportunities for learning to be extended outside of the class room. There are many methods that can be utilized through homework and practices. Homework should be assigned based on grade level and be focused on difficult concepts. Homework should have immediate feedback, this allows the students to assess their own ability in different subject matters. The feedback methods should vary to maximize its effectiveness and have a purpose that is clear and understandable to students. As the saying goes "practice makes perfect"
Nonlinguistic Representation is the construction of images of information that have been received by means of pictures, smells, tastes, textures, and kinesthetic sensations. There are a variety of methods that can be used to help students learn by nonlinguistic means, such as sketches, graphs, photos, maps, symbols, and simulation. The key to successful nonlinguistic teaching is to highlight crucial information in a way that the student can remember using their senses which makes it that much more meaningful to them. Nonlinguistic teaching strategies can be used to enhance a lesson and used in conjunction with Marzano’s other high yield strategies to maximize learning.
Setting Objectives and Providing Feedback is a teaching method in which an educator sets clear goals for students, but not the manner in which students should be reaching these goals. Students are also given a way to measure their own understanding as they go through each lesson to better evaluate what steps need to be taken to reach the objective. Educators provide specific feedback in a timely manner to each student in order to measure student understanding.
Providing Recognition can often keep student on task of what they are doing. It’s a focus for the students to master the objective successfully. Recognition or praise has also been discussed in the literature as a classroom management technique for promoting engagement to decrease inappropriate behavior (Clemons, Igel, & Beesley, 2010). A powerful way to reinforce the influence of effort on achievement is to have students occasionally assess their effort and achievement on a task and note the relationship between the two. Reinforcement needs to have an effect on the student doing the work. Students should be provided with some initial tasks that are challenging but not beyond their capabilities. Success on these tasks will allow teachers to gradually present more challenging tasks and link new work to past successes (Clemons, Igel, & Beesley, 2010).
Summarizing and Note Taking is the concept of taking the best notes possible. There are many methods to note taking. Notes should be lengthy and understandable. However, lengthy does not mean overused words and unimportant information. Notes should still be summarized with only the most important concepts. Topic sentences are one way to keep students on track. A topic sentence clarifies the information that the student will learn from that note section. Frames are another way to keep the information orderly. To help with figuring out what information is most important, think of questions that may be asked. Also predict what information will likely be most beneficial.
